Soccer Gaels range far afield to find recruits

Queen's Golden Gaels will have a west coast flavour in coming Ontario University Athletics men's soccer seasons. Five of 10 recruits announced by the Gaels this week come from British Columbia.
"We have a number of players returning next season, but quite a few will be graduating after the 2013 season," Gaels coach Chris Gencarelli said in a release. "With this in mind, we wanted to ensure that this year's recruiting class was as strong as ever. I'm confident we were able to achieve this.
"These players bring with them a wealth of prior playing experience at the highest levels within their respective regions. Most importantly, all of these individuals are good character men - they should have no problem acclimating to our philosophy and style of play."
Gencarelli ranged far afield for the 10 recruits, with only two of them - Greg Simmons (Whitby) and Rohan Sarna (Missassauga) coming from Ontario. Simmons is familiar with Kingston, having graduated in 2008 from St. Lawrence College, where he was captain of the men's soccer team.
The other incoming freshmen are:
Sam Abernathy (Halifax), Tonko Bacelic (Vancouver), Conor Hannigan (Victoria), Kyle Lemon (Ascot, Berkshire, U.K.), Cormac Southam (Nelson, B.C.), Chris Wellsman, (Victoria) and goalkeepers Makenzie Hill (Fredericton, N.B.), Daniel van Woerkens (North Vancouver, B.C.).
Queen's lost just once during the regular schedule in 2012, capturing the OUA East division championship with an 11-1-2 record, its best in more than a decade. The Gaels will begin their regular season Sept. 4 when they will host Carleton on the upper west campus field.
