Kings thumped at Whitby
Posted: June 14th, 2013 @ 1:42am
WHITBY - Whitby Warriors scored three goals on their first five shots in the first four minutes of the game and for the Kingston Kings it went downhill from there as they absorbed a 14-3 beating in an Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League game Thursday night at Iroquois Park.
The Kings, now with just one win in their last four games, fell to 4-5-1, though they still hold third place by two points over Peterborough, a team that has played four fewer games. With the win Whitby re-entered the race for fourth place - and home-floor advantage in the first round of playoffs. The Warriors are now 3-5-1, tied with Peterborough at seven points, and they've swept the season series with Kingston.
The Kings, in fact, have been easy pickings for teams from the former Central division, a collective 0-24 against Clarington, Peterborough and Whitby since the Kingston junior club was re-formed in 2009. This year in five games, Kingston is 0-5 against those teams, and they've been outscored 61-21 in the process, with 11 of those 21 Kingston goals coming in one game.
Thursday night the Kings were lead-footed on defence as goaltenders David Joseph and Nic McFarlane faced numerous breakaways and most of the Whitby goals came from players who were left unprotected near the net. On offence, the Kings were unlucky, as they actually outshot the home team 66-63 but were routinely denied by Warriors goaltender Jeff Heickert, who was superb.
It was 5-0 before Zach Masterson scored Kingston's first goal with five minutes left in the first period. It was 8-1 when Haneh Brant scored the Kings' second goal with seven seconds left in the second period. After Whitby opened the third period with three goals in the first three minutes, Josh Smith scored Kingston's final goal midway through the period.
Jeff Fernandes had four goals and three assists for Whitby, while Connor van Ryn scored three goals and Zack Lysyk, Matt Holliday and Colin Amodeo scored twice each. Connor Scott had the other Warriors' goal. He and Holliday each had four assists.
Kingston's power play was symptomatic of the general malaise: 0-for-7 with two shorthanded goals against.
The Kings will be trying to reverse their fortunes against former Central division teams next Thursday, when they will host the Peterborough Lakers, 8 p.m., at Centre 70. Related Articles:
