Kings begin crucial week Tuesday in Brockville

Kingston Kings begin the home stretch of their Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League season with a pair of games this week, starting Tuesday night in Brockville. Thursday, Kingston will host the defending East division champion Cornwall Celtics.
The Kings, 4-6-1, have five games remaining in their schedule, two each against the Ballistic and Cornwall Celtics and one with last-place Gloucester. They start the week tied for fourth place with Whitby, four points behind third-place Peterborough and four ahead of sixth-place Brockville.
Kingston is coming off a 12-11 overtime defeat at the hands of Peterborough last Thursday that was bitterly disappointing for how close the Kings came to defeating a team they had never beaten, but satisfying for the way they failed to fold in the face of adversity. In that game, the Kings overcame deficits of 6-2 (at the end of the first period), 9-4 (midway through the second) and 11-8 (with nine minutes left in the third period) to tie the game, with a goal less than seven seconds from the end of regulation time.
The 11 goals Kingston scored was the most by any team against Peterborough this year, and in the last 37 minutes of the game the Kings allowed just three goals against one of the league's perennially most successful teams.
Nonetheless, Kingston has won just one if its last five games and desperately needs a win over Brockville to cement its grip on fifth place, and thereby avoid having to face Cornwall, Peterborough or Clarington in the first round of playoffs. Fourth place would be the prize at this point, and with it home-floor advantage in the first round of post-season play.
Brockville will similarly be eager for a win, to climb back into the battle for fourth place with the Kings and Whitby. The Ballistic will be playing its third game in four days, after being stung on the weekend 11-5 by Peterborough and 15-5 by Cornwall.
Brockville has won just one of its last eight games - 12-4 over Whitby, June 9 - and has one point to show for two games with Kingston this year, from an 8-8 overtime tie at Centre 70 June 6. In that game the Kings overcame a 7-3 deficit with four unanswered goals in the third period to force the extra session. In the teams' only meeting this year in Brockville, Kingston prevailed 13-6 in a game where the Kings blew an early three-goal lead but took command with six goals in the final 10 minutes of the second period.
Thursday's game with the Celtics will be Kingston's first this year with the two-time defending division champions. Cornwall, 9-2, begins the week solidly in second place, four points behind undefeated Clarington. Game time at Centre 70 is 8 p.m.
