Kings gain vital 8-4 win over Brockville

BROCKVILLE - Kingston Kings ended a three-game winless streak Tuesday night with an 8-4 Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League victory over the Brockville Ballistic at the Memorial Centre here.
It was an important win for the Kings, 5-6-1, who moved two points ahead of Whitby in the battle for fourth place in the East division. The Warriors were defeated 11-7 by division-leading Clarington Tuesday night.
It was a solid, if unspectacular, win for the Kings, who spread their eight goals among six different players. Kingston scored first, never trailed and outshot the home team 66-49. Twice when Brockville had the opportunity to get back in the game - closing from 3-0 to 3-2 in the first period, then from 6-2 to 6-4 in the second minute of the third - the Kings answered with the next goal to diffuse the rally.
With four games remaining to be played, the victory allowed the Kings to match the number of victories and exceed their points total of last season, when they finished 5-11. Undefeated against the Ballistic this year - 2-0-1 - the Kings moved six points ahead of Brockville, which fell to 2-9-1 and also has four games left to play.
Zach Masterson and Josh Smith each scored twice for Kingston, which got its other goals from Haneh Brant, Jay Waller, Alec Johnston and Kyle Aylesworth. Aylesworth added three assists and moved into sixth place in the league scoring race, with 42 points in 12 games.
Now with 126 points lifetime, Aylesworth also moved two points past Sandy McDermid into eighth place among Kingston's leading junior scorers, all-time. Next in sight is Dan Wilson, who had 135 points in a three-year career with the Kings, 1973-75.
Deven Primeau, Jarret Pitt, Dustin McInroy and Cory Robertson scored once each for the Ballistic. Robertson also had two assists.
The Kings resume play Thursday when they will host the Cornwall Celtics at 8 p.m. at Centre 70. It will be the first meeting of the year for the Kings and the two-time defending East division champions, who are solidly in second place with a 9-2 record.
