Teeswater wins midget elimination fastball tournament
Posted: June 30th, 2013 @ 6:55pm
NAPANEE - Teeswater Otters scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to claim a 3-2 win over the Port Perry Lumberjacks Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Ontario midget fastball elimination tournament.
Teeswater was undefeated in four games in winning the 12-team, three-day event that decided who would represent the province at the national under-18 championship in August at St-Leonard d'Aston, Que.
The host Napanee Express bowed from contention after being edged 4-3 to the Kitchener-Waterloo Kolts in eight innings late Saturday night. The Express, after losing its second game Saturday morning, won two games in the afternoon and finished the tournament 3-2.
Teeswater, Port Perry and the team Port Perry defeated in Sunday morning's semifinal game, the Tavistock Athletics, will all be going to Quebec. For winning the tournament, however, in addition to bragging rights Teeswater gets first choice of players from the rest of Ontario to add for the national championship.
First prize in that lottery is expected to be Kitchener's Johnny Baker, who plays shortstop when he doesn't pitch. Saturday night against Napanee Baker came on in relief and struck out eight in four innings, including the side in the top of the eighth. At the plate, when Napanee pitchers weren't walking him - intentionally or semi-intentionally, as they did in the seventh inning, even though he represented the winning run - Baker was pounding the ball. He had a double and a triple and drove in the tying run in the fifth inning.
The win Saturday night over Napanee sent Kitchener into a game Sunday morning against Tavistock, which the A's won 9-7. Tavistock was then defeated 11-5 by Port Perry, which advanced to the final game against Teeswater.
That game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning, when, with two out, Tyler Fritz had a bunt base-hit. He stole second and when the throw was wide of the base he took third, from where he scored on Cory McGregor's single.
The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth when Port Perry, which had managed to hit one ball to the outfield in the first five innings, seemed to figure out Otters pitcher Tyler Randerson. Cody Till led off the inning with a single up the middle and two outs later, Layne O'Holloran scored him with a double to right on a ball that was in and out of the glove of a diving Jared Weishar.
O'Holloran scored the go-ahead run on a single by pitcher Jeff St. Pierre.
In the top of the seventh, with one out pinch-hitter Brody Tenpas singled and Mitch Eckert, Teeswater's No. 9 hitter, beat out an infield hit. They both moved up on an infield ground out and they both scored on a two-out double by Nick Penner. Penner went to third on a wild pitch but he died there.
Port Perry had two singles in the bottom of the seventh but the Lumberjacks couldn't get a runner past second base around three strikeouts by Randerson.
Randerson finished with a seven-hitter and he struck out eight, including the last four outs after St. Pierre's single in the sixth. The only player to get two hits against him was Till.
St. Pierre also allowed seven hits, three of them in the seventh inning. He struck out four. McGregor touched him for two hits, including a two-out triple in the second inning.
