Kings whipped in Cornwall

CORNWALL - Kingston Kings surrendered 10 goals in the first period and they went on to absorb a 16-7 Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League defeat here Thursday night at the hands of the Cornwall Celtics.
For Cornwall, it was the second win in eight days over the Kings, and it enabled the Celtics, 12-2, to move into a first-place tie with the idle Clarington Shamrox atop the East division standings. Cornwall will conclude its regular schedule Sunday afternoon in Clarington.
Kingston, 5-8-1 and winner of just one of its last six games, wasted an opportunity to cement its grip on fourth place. The Kings maintain a two-point lead over fifth-place Whitby, but the Warriors have now played two fewer games.
The game began horribly for Kingston, as Cornwall scored in the game's second minute, led 4-0 by the time the game was six minutes old and - a minute after the Kings scored their first goal on a 5-on-3 power play - scored a shorthanded goal at 10:43 for a 5-1 lead.
Three goals in 33 seconds in the game's 18th minute turned the game into a rout and two goals seven seconds apart in the first minute of the second period made it a laugher at 12-1. At that point the Celtics took their foot off the gas - passing up scoring opportunities while shorthanded in favour of maintaining possession to kill the clock, and consuming most of the 30-second shot clock each time they had the ball on offence - and Kingston actually outscored the home team 6-4 the rest of the way.
Kyle Aylesworth had four goals and two assists for the Kings, while Josh Smith had the other three goals and added a pair of assists.
Ryne Legue had four goals for the Celtics, while Quin MacDonell had three. Matt Bourassa and Ryan Dewar scored two goals apiece and Brock Daze, Brandon Perras, Conner Thompson, Liam Vipond and Steven Melios shared the rest. Bourassa collected four assists.
With No. 1 goaltender David Joseph home ill, Nic McFarlane got the start in the Kingston goal. He allowed five goals on 12 shots in the first 11 minutes of the game, at which point he was replaced by 16-year-old Joel Evoy. Evoy, younger brother of Kingston's Jake Evoy, was recalled from the midget A team in Nepean. With no better defensive support than McFarlane received, he gave up the next seven goals on 14 shots, but he made 33 saves the rest of the way in his junior debut.
On the night Kingston was outshot 63-53.
The Kings will end their second straight regular season without a win - 0-14 - against a .500 team. Kingston hasn't beaten a team ahead of it in the standings since the first round of 2011 playoffs against Brockville.
The Kings will conclude their 2013 schedule next week with games Wednesday against winless Gloucester in Ottawa and Thursday at home against 3-9-1 Brockville.
