Owen Klassen helps men's basketball team to quarter-finals today at FISU Games

Kingston's Owen Klassen will play for Canada today as the Canadian men meet Brazil in the quarter-finals of the men's basketball tournament at the World Student Games in Kazan, Russia.
The Canadians defeated the U.S. 94-85 Friday to finish preliminary play atop their pool with a 5-0 record. Klassen, the Bayridge Secondary School grad who plays university ball at Acadia, had six points and four rebounds in 19 minutes of playing time.
Earlier, Klassen had 12 rebounds and six points in Canada's 87-56 win Thursday over the Czech Republic; nine points and 10 rebounds in a 92-83 win over Australia - the Australians' only loss to date - 10 points in a 137-43 win over the United Arab Emirates and 10 rebounds and nine points in an 84-69 win over Sweden.
Klassen is one of a handful of local athletes on the Canadian team at the 27th Summer Universiade.
Jackie Tessier of Queen's is a member of the women's soccer team that will play Russia for ninth place Monday after a 3-0 victory Saturday over Estonia. Tessier scored Canada's second goal in the game's 84th minute.
The Canadians, 2-3 in the tournament, failed to qualify to the medal round after losing their first two games, 1-0 to Ireland and 3-2 to Mexico. Tessier then scored in a 4-0 win over China in Canada's final preliminary-round game.
Canada then defeated China again, 2-1, in the first game of the consolation playoffs Thursday.
Queen's grad Sam Pedlow and Grant O'Gorman lost 5-4 Friday to the U.S. to finish seventh in the men's beach volleyball tournament, the highest finish ever in the event for Canada at the FISU Games.
Kingston fencer Kerr Hutchinson, a student at University of Ottawa, lost 15-9 to Malaysian Hasmie Sohaini in his first-round men's epee match. He was then part of the Canadian epee team that lost its first-round match 45-39 to Portugal.
Three coaches from Royal Military College are part of the Canadian team in Russia, including Patricia Howes of the fencing team.
Sean McDonaugh is coach of the men's rugby team that begins play today and Steve Leknois is an assistant with the men's volleyball team that is 3-2 and bound for the consolation round after losing a quarter-final match Saturday 3-0 to Ukraine.
