Canada bows to Russia, will play for bronze at FISU basketball
 Posted: July 15th, 2013 @ 1:08pm
Canada will play for the men's basketball bronze medal Tuesday at the World Student Games, after they dropped a 78-68 semifinal decision today to host Russia at Kazan.
The Canadians, undefeated through five preliminary games and Sunday's quarter-final win over Brazil, fell behind 22-11 in the first quarter. Russia, undefeated in the tournament - having scored 94 points or more in four of its games - led 43-26 at halftime and 64-44 going into the fourth quarter, when Canada rallied. Though the Canadians outscored Russia 24-14 in the final 10 minutes, it wasn't enough.
Kingston's Owen Klassen, a senior at Acadia University, had five points and five rebounds in 18 minutes of playing time for Canada, which will face Serbia in the bronze-medal match at 7 p.m. local time (11 a.m. EDT).
Serbia lost 65-62 to Australia in today's other semifinal. The only blemish on the Australian record is a 92-83 loss to Canada in the preliminary round.
