Kings on verge of elimination after dropping 9-4 decision
Posted: July 18th, 2013 @ 12:35am
Whitby Warriors scored three goals in the first four and a half minutes of the second period and they went on to defeat the Kingston Kings 9-4 in an Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League playoff game Wednesday night at Centre 70.
A crowd of about 200 watched the Warriors take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five East division quarter-final series. Game 3 will be played Friday night in Whitby.
The teams traded goals in the first five minutes of the game and Whitby led 2-1 at the end of the first period. Jon Leclerc snared a loose ball off the second-half draw, sped by the lone Kings defender and scored off the breakaway after just seven seconds. It was the second of three shorthanded goals the Warriors would score.
Two more goals followed as the visitors took a 5-1 lead. Kingston's Alec Johnston scored just 10 seconds after that flurry but the Kings didn't score again until the final minute, and Whitby ended the period with a 7-3 lead.
Zach Masterson scored just 22 seconds into the third period but the Kings would get no spark from it. The next 13 minutes were scoreless and Whitby closed with the game's final two goals.
Josh Smith had the other two Kingston goals and an assist. Jeff Fernandes had two goals and three assists for Whitby, while Leclerc, Connor O'Rahilly, Colin Amodeo, Kyle Harper, Connor Scott, Matt Holliday and Matt Lyons scored once each.
Jacob Mark made 56 saves in the Whitby goal, as the Kings outshot the Warriors 60-51. Related Articles:
