Local athletes bound for Canada Games

Several local athletes are bound for Sherbrooke, Que., this week for the beginning of the Canada Summer Games. The opening ceremony will be held Friday and competition in 19 different sports will run through Saturday, Aug. 17.
Rower Matt Christie, just back from the world under-23 championships - where he finished 17th in the men's lightweight single - will be one of six Kingston-area athletes on Team Ontario. The rowing competition begins Tuesday, Aug. 13.
Also on the Ontario team are golfer Austin James of Bath, cyclists Anne Foreman-Mackey and Evan McNeely, fencer Celeste Suart and swimmer Cassidy Tran. Patricia Howes of Royal Military College and Cutting Edge Fencing is a coach of the Ontario fencing team.
Swimming and mountain biking competition will commence Sunday. Golf, road cycling and fencing will be contested in Week 2 of the Games.
Brett Hagarty of the Queen's University women's volleyball team will be on the court for Ontario when volleyball competition begins Saturday at the University of Sherbrooke. Hagarty, from Aurora, was named to last season's Ontario University Athletics all-rookie team.
In addition to Christie, four other rowers from Queen's will be part of Ontario crews competing on Lake Magog - Lark Davenport Huyer of Caledon, Danielle Abusow of London, Shelby Stinnissen of Peterborough and Scott MacDonald of Toronto.
Queen's coach Katie Edwards will be coaching the Nova Scotia rowers, one of whom is incoming Queen's freshman Sacha Ruzzante of Halifax. Three other Queen's rowers, William Kennedy, Colin Findlay and Stephen Holloway of Calgary, will be racing for Alberta.
The Canada Games are designed as a developmental competition for Canada's next generation of national-team athletes. Each sport establishes its own criteria for who will take part, generally with an age restriction - most require athletes to be under the age of 21 - and, in most cases, sports allow only athletes who have not already been to a major international competition such as a world championship or Pan American or Olympic Games.
