Grenadiers travel to Markham for playoff match

Kingston Grenadiers will be trying to stay alive Saturday night when they visit the Markham Raiders in an Ontario Varsity Football League varsity quarter-final game at the Mount Joy field. Game time is 7:30.
The Grenadiers, Markham and Cornwall all finished the regular year with 6-2 records, a three-way tie for second place in the Wettges conference that, though the Wildcats played neither Kingston nor Cornwall in the regular year, was broken in Markham's favour.
The Raiders, therefore, had a first-round playoff bye while Kingston was defeating Oshawa 42-7 last Saturday.
Cornwall, 44-7 winner last week over Metro Toronto, will play undefeated Ottawa Myers Riders Saturday night in the other conference semifinal.
A team with the seventh-best offence and ninth-best defence in the league, the Raiders won four of their last five games and were 2-0 in one-point decisions.
The Grenadiers, winners of five in a row at the start of the season who are 2-2 since, were 10th in the league during the regular year with 20.6 points per game but third overall defensively, allowing just 16.1 points per game. But for a 76-point disaster at Ottawa, Kingston has permitted an average of just 7.5 points per game.
"Markham will be a challenge," Grenadiers coach Bob Mullen said. "They're big and they're athletic, on offence, anyway. They run and they pass.
"In all aspects of the game we're going to have to play together for 60 minutes instead of 30."
Markham's leading offensive threat is receiver Marcus Arkarakas, who led the league with both 70 receptions and 1,173 yards. He scored 11 touchdowns.
Quarterback Eric Kimmerly completed 66 per cent of his passes for 1,431 yards, sixth best in the league. He threw 13 TD passes but nine interceptions. He also scored eight rushing touchdowns.
Markham running back Nicholas Morassut was the league's third-leading rusher, with 838 yards.
