Posted: August 8th, 2013 @ 12:16am
Ontario will play for the bronze medal in women's volleyball today at the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que.
The Ontario team, which includes Queen's University varsity players Brett Hagarty and Niki Slikboer, lost 3-1 to undefeated British Columbia last night, 25-20, 25-16, 21-25, 25-21.
Ontario will face Manitoba in the bronze-medal match Thursday morning at 11 o'clock. B.C. will play Alberta for the gold.
In the University of Sherbrooke pool last night, Kingston's Cassidy Tran was sixth in the final of the Special Olympics women's 50-metre backstroke. A member of the Kingston Y Penguins, Tran stopped the clock in 48.87 seconds, an improvement of half a second over her qualifying time Wednesday morning, which was also the sixth best in the field of 15 competitors.
Alberta's April Lam won the gold medal in 44.40 seconds.
Wednesday's night's race was Tran's fourth final at these Games. She won the gold medal in the 50-metre breaststroke Monday and she finished fourth in both the 100-metre freestyle Monday and the 100-metre backstroke Tuesday night.
Tran will swim in the heats of the 50-metre freestyle Thursday morning.
Elsewhere Wednesday, Kingston's Evan McNeely finished 13th in the men's mountain bike sprint. McNeely was second in his heat to Quebec's Leandre Bouchard, but he failed to qualify for the semifinals. Bouchard went on to win his third gold medal of the Games. Related Articles:
