Matt Christie wins heat at Canada Games rowing
Posted: August 13th, 2013 @ 2:49pm
Kingston's Matthew Christie won his heat this moring in the men's single sculls as the Canada Games rowing competition in Sherbrooke got under way on Lake Magog.
Christie, 17th last month at the world under-23 championships in the men's lightweight single, advances directly to Friday's final. His time, 7 minutes 10.99 seconds, was the second-fastest posted in yesterday's heats to the 7:06.54 with which Taylor Perry of New Brunswick won the other heat.
Christie's Queen's University teammate Colin Findlay, rowing for Alberta, was fourth in Christie's heat, 7:39.20, and dispatched to Tuesday afternoon's repechage, where he finished last.
Several other Queen's rowers enjoyed success Tuesday.
Danielle Abusow of London was part of the Ontario crew that won its heat and posted the fastest qualifying time overall, 6:39.84, in the women's quadruple sculls. That crew has advanced directly to Friday's final, as has the Ontario women's eight, with Queen's rowers Lark Davenport of Toronto and Shelby Stinnissen of Peterborough in the boat.
The eight also won its heat with the best time overall, 6:22.84, eight-tenths of a second faster than the British Columbia crew that won the other heat.
William Kennedy of Queen's was a member of Alberta's lightweight men's four that was second in its heat in 6:14.31, 13 seconds behind the winning time of the B.C. crew but the third-fastest time overall and good enough to send the Albertans straight to Friday's final. Related Articles:
