Holy Cross bound for OFSAA basketball tourney

CLAUDE SCILLEY

Holy Cross Crusaders had a relatively easy time of it Friday as they qualified for the provincial high school basketball tournament.

Playing on their home court, the Crusaders dispatched the Thousand Islands Pirates of Brockville 64-24 Friday morning, and closed the three-team round-robin tournament in the afternoon with a 59-33 victory over St. Joseph's of Cornwall.

Holy Cross was never threatened in either game. The Crusaders stretched a 10-4 lead in the first game to 32-4 before Thousand Islands finally scored again with about 90 seconds left in the second quarter.

The Crusaders led 40-8 at halftime.

"We worked on a couple of things we practised during the week," said Holy Cross coach Robin Dzierniejko. "It would have been nice if the games had been closer so we could work on new things and not look like goons.

"We focused on our half-court defensive intensity and it looked better today than it has in a while."

Brody Maracle led the Crusaders with 15 points in the first game, while Brent Martindale added 12. Eleven different players hit the scoresheet for Holy Cross.

Against Cornwall, Eric Macrow scored 11 for the home team, as 12 different Crusaders scored.

"We finished strong, with our five starters at the end. It was their last home game," Dzierniejko said, "but nobody played more than 20 minutes."

Possibly due to the fact they weren't seriously challenged, possibly due to playing deep into their bench, the Crusaders committed 15 turnovers.

"It's tough to keep the momentum going, keep the fire burning (in games that aren't close)," Dzierniejko said, "but I'd say that for three-quarters of the games they pushed themselves to get ready for the dance."

The Crusaders will play for the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations AAA championship March 3-6 at Windsor.
