Kingston-connected athletes end Canada Games with 16 medals

Kingston-connected athletes won six medals Saturday on the final day of competition at the Canada Summer Games in and around Sherbrooke, Que.
Cyclist Anne Foreman-Mackey won her second gold medal of the Games in the women's criterium. With 15 points she finished ahead of Quebec's Adriane Provost.
Earlier, Foreman-Mackey, a final-year life sciences student at McMaster University, won the women's time trial.
Golfer Austin James of Bath had his best round of the tournament, a one-under-par 72, helping Ontario move from fourth place to win the men's team silver medal. James and Carter Simon of Sutton had the two best scores of any teammates Saturday on the Milby Golf Club course to finish with a four-day team total of 583, 12 strokes behind British Columbia and three better than Quebec.
Individually, James moved up five places to finish in a tie for eighth place at eight-over-par 300.
Kevin Kwon of B.C., with a tournament-best single-day score of six-under 67, claimed the individual championship going away, with a 13-under-par 279 and a 13-shot victory over Etienne Papineau of Quebec and Matt Williams of Alberta. Papineau and Williams, with a 75 and 76, respectively, Saturday, closed the 72-hole event at even-par 292.
Those medal-winning performances, and four more by Queen's University rowers Saturday on Lake Magog, bring to 16 the number of times a Kingston athlete stepped onto the podium at the two-week, multisport endeavour.
On the water, Lark Davenport Huyer of Queen's won her third medal of the Games, silver in the women's double sculls. She and Erin Snelgrove finished in 7 minutes 6.28 seconds, four seconds behind the winning crew from B.C. and exactly one second ahead of the bronze-medal boat from Alberta.
On Friday she was part of Ontario's silver medal-winning women's eight and bronze-medal winning quadruple sculls.
Scott MacDonald of Queen's won two silver medals Saturday, helping Ontario crews finish second in both the men's four and eight.
In the four, Ontario finished in 6:01.87, more than five seconds behind the winning B.C. boat and almost four seconds ahead of Quebec. In the same race, William Kennedy of Queen's rowed for Alberta, which finished fourth.
In the eight, Ontario was almost six seconds behind gold medal-winning B.C. but comfortably ahead of New Brunswick. Alberta, with Kennedy again in the boat, was fifth.
Queen's rower Danielle Abusow won her second medal of the Games, this time in the women's lightweight double, where Ontario was second by about four and a half seconds to the winners from B.C. Saskatchewan finished third, four and a half seconds behind Ontario.
Abusow's other medal, a bronze, came Friday in the women's quadruple sculls.
Also Saturday, Stephen Holloway of Queen's was fourth in the Alberta men's double sculls, five seconds behind bronze medal-winning B.C. in a race won by the crew from Ontario.
In all, Queen's rowers won 11 medals in the week-long regatta.
The other medals won by Kingston-connected athletes at these Games were taken home by Cassidy Tran of the Kingston Y Penguins, gold, in the women's Special Olympics 50-metre breaststroke; Evan McNeely, silver, as part of Ontario's mountain bike relay team; Matthew Christie of Kingston, silver, in the men's single sculls; Queen's rower Shelby Stinnissen, silver, in the women's eight; Kennedy, bronze, in the men's lightweight four and Holloway, bronze, in the men's quadruple sculls.
The 2017 Canada Games will be held in Winnipeg.
