Bergin, Dube score but Axemen lose final game at President's Cup

Capital Region Axemen dropped their final game of the President's Cup lacrosse tournament Friday night, 12-3 to the previously winless Nanaimo Timbermen.
The defeat leaves the Axemen 1-5 at the seven-team national senior B championship, which will begin its playoff round Saturday in Kahnawake, Que.
A shorthanded goal by Tim Bergin, a Kingston minor lacrosse graduate and original member of the Kingston Cavaliers, was the only goal the Axemen managed in the first period, as they fell behind 4-1.
Mike Dube, the junior Kings coach who is the other Kingston connection to the tournament, had a goal and an assist for the Axemen.
Capital Region, already eliminated from contention for a semifinal berth, got as close as 5-3 early in the second period on Dube's goal but the game got away when the Axemen allowed three goals in a 63-second span in the middle part of the period.
Bergin finished the tournament as the Axemen's leading scorer, with 19 points in six games, including a team-best 14 assists. Dube, who scored five goals in five games, tied for second among Capital Region scorers with 14 points.
