Aaron Doornekamp scores seven points for Canada in FIBA Americas victory over Brazil

Odessa's Aaron Doornekamp scored seven points Sunday as Canada defeated Brazil 91-62 on the third day of the FIBA Americas basketball tournament in Caracas, Venezeula.
It was the second win in three games for Canada, which sits second in its pool at the 10-team tournament behind undefeated Puerto Rico, and the first for the national team over Brazil since August, 2003.
Only two Canadian players played more than Doornekamp's 25 minutes Sunday. The Ernestown Secondary School grad had three rebounds and his three-point basket in the third quarter lifted Canada into a comfortable 55-38 lead.
The Canadians took control of the game with a 14-0 run in the second quarter that helped to send them into halftime with a 44-34 lead. Cory Joseph scored 28 points to lead the winners.
On Saturday Doornekamp, who did not play in Canada's tournament-opening victory Friday over Jamaica, played 11 minutes, scored a three-point basket and pulled down a pair of rebounds as the Canadians bowed 83-67 to Puerto Rico.
A 13-of-19 run in the third quarter put Canada into a four-point lead but from a period that featured eight lead changes, Canada emerged trailing by one point, 59-58. After Andrew Nicholson fouled out of the game with 6:21 to play, Puerto Rico went on an 11-0 spree that clinched the victory.
Nicholson left the game with a team-best 21 points and seven rebounds.
Canada has Monday off and will resume play Tuesday against Uruguay, which has won its only game so far at the tournament. The four semifinalists will all earn a berth in the 2014 World Cup in Spain.
