Canada bows to hosts at FIBA Americas tournament
Posted: September 6th, 2013 @ 9:49pm
Odessa's Aaron Doornekamp had his best game of the tournament but it couldn't prevent Canada from absorbing a 64-59 defeat at the hands of the host team at the FIBA Americas championship in Caracas, Venezuela.
It was the first loss of the second round for Canada, now one of three teams tied at 3-2, with Venezuela and Mexico, behind the last remaining undefeated team, Puerto Rico. The Canadians resume play Saturday against the Dominican Republic, 2-2 going into Friday's late game against Puerto Rico.
Doornekamp started and he played 35 minutes against the Venezuelans Friday. The Carleton University grad had 10 rebounds, his tournament best, six points and three assists. He was just 2-for-9 from the field, however - 1-for-4 from three-point range - and committed two turnovers.
Cory Joseph led Canada with 14 points while Tristan Thompson scored 12.
The Canadians trailed 35-26 at halftime and closed to within one point at 60-59 on a basket by Thompson with two minutes to play but they could get no closer thanks to 0-for-5 shooting the rest of the way.
The eight teams who advanced to the second round are playing for berths at the World Cup next summer. The four semifinalists will all earn trips to next year's tournament in Spain. Related Articles:
