Frontenac begins title defence with 21-10 win over Regi

Posted: September 13th, 2013 @ 7:50pm

Frontenac Falcons scored 14 points in the first quarter and they went on to defeat the Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers 21-10 Friday on the opening day of the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association senior football season.

Playing at Regi's Brother O'Gara Field, Jacob Veenstra scored a pair of touchdowns on passes from quarterback Rob Magee, including the first score of the game 7:28 into the opening quarter. It came on the first series of any substance, after neither team managed to move the ball in either of its first two possessions.

Before the period ended, Frontenac's Dillon Wisteard scooped up a fumble and took it 25 yards to the Regi one-yard line. Two plays later Braeden Stevenhaagen carried over for the Falcons' other touchdown.

Regi blocked a punt near the Frontenac 20 midway through the second quarter and took the ball to the Frontenac 12-yard line but the Panthers came away with just an 11-yard field goal by Nick Carriere that lifted them to within 14-3, the score the teams took into halftime.

Neither team had much success moving the ball and there was no more scoring until Veenstra's second touchdown, on splendid diving catch of a 10-yard pass in the final minute of the third quarter, gave the two-time defending champions a 21-3 lead.

Regi quarterback Courtney Norris and receiver Chris Niles connected for a 26-yard touchdown with 25 seconds left in the game to complete scoring.

Elsewhere, the La Salle Black Knights defeated the Bayridge Blazers 19-6 and the Sydenham Golden Eagles beat the Holy Cross Crusaders 17-7.
