Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:
Fifty years ago today, February 24, 1963
The Frontenacs gain a measure of revenge and move back into a first place tie with a 6-3 victory over the Hull-Ottawa Canadiens Sunday in Hull. Pete Panagabko scores the pivotal goal on a penalty shot early in the third period, when he was pulled down by Claude Larose after being sent into the clear by Cliff Pennington.
The two-game clash of the Eastern Professional Hockey League leaders decided little, as the teams each scored seven goals in the two games, and each won in the opponent's arena. Pennington scored twice for Kingston, as Harry Sinden, Don Blackburn, Red Ouellette and Jeannot Gilbert scored once each. Gilbert's goal was his 31st of the season.
Red Berenson scored twice on the weekend for Hull-Ottawa, which got its other goals from Bob Courcy, John Rodger, Chuck Hamilton, Billy Carter and Jacques Laperriere.
Frontenacs general manager-coach Wren Blair, who exploded in a rage after Kingston was whipped at home the previous night, was not at the game Sunday and Whig-Standard sports editor Doug McConnell wrote there may have been method in the Bird's madness:
"Blair cracks the whip. That is no secret. He wasn't cracking it Sunday, didn't even accompany the team to Hull for the game. It is possible that the players were so glad to get away from the volatile coach that they outplayed the Habs in relieved appreciation. And if that theory has any merit, it is also probable that's the way Blair planned it."
