Queen's soccer women retain share of first place

Queen's Golden Gaels, the No. 2-ranked women's soccer team in Canada, went into North Bay Sunday and left with just a 1-1 draw against the Nipissing Lakers, a team that has won just one of its six Ontario University Athletics games this year.
The point allowed Queen's, 4-0-2, to keep a share of first place in the East division with the Ottawa Gee-Gees, who whipped Trent 11-0 Sunday.
An early goal by Regiopolis Notre Dame grad Brittany Almeida in the game's sixth minute was the only goal the Gaels could muster, but it appeared it might stand up for the win until the game's 87th minute, when rookie Renee Clark tied the game for the Lakers, beating rookie goalkeeper - and fellow nursing student - Michaila Frawley.
It was just the second goal surrendered this year by the Gaels, who outshot the home side 13-6, and had 11 corner kicks to just three for Nipissing.
For Nipissing, the tie was the third of the season, following a 2-2 draw Saturday against the Royal Military College Paladins. After midfielder Lisa Udegbunam scored a pair of first-half goals for RMC, the Lakers, as they did against Queen's, saved the heroics for late, as Sara Duval scored the tying goal in the game's 90th minute.
RMC ended its weekend with a 3-0 defeat Sunday at Laurentian, falling to 0-5-1.
In Sudbury Saturday, Madison Tyrell made six saves for the shutout and Queen's got goals from Rachel Radu, Tara Bartram and Kayla Crnic as the Gaels handed the Laurentian Voyageurs their first defeat of the season, 3-0.
In men's play at Nipissing Sunday, Gaels goalkeeper Dylan Maxwell stopped all six shots he faced to help Queen's gain a 3-0 win.
The game was scoreless until Oliver Coren scored Queen's first goal in the final minute before halftime. Goals by Chris Wellsman and Tommy Hong, five minutes apart, late in the game, clinched the victory.
Saturday in Sudbury, a goal by Hong in the 81st minute allowed Queen's to escape with a 1-1 draw. The Gaels' northern swing ended with them possessing a record of 2-1-1.
The Gaels will resume play Saturday, when they host the Ryerson Rams in a doubleheader that will commence with the women's game at 1 p.m.
