Western climbs in football Top 10 at Queen's expense

Queen's Golden Gaels slipped one place in this week's national ranking of Canadian university football teams released by Canadian Interuniversity Sport.Their punishment from the 20-member panel of the University Football Reporters of Canada for having a bye week was to fall to No. 3, behind No. 1 Laval, which retained its place for the fourth week in a row, and Western, which climbed to No. 2 after pummeling Ottawa 83-27 on Saturday.Laval defeated two-time Atlantic conference champion Acadia 26-14 in Wolfville Saturday, setting up a Quebec conference showdown this Sunday with No. 4-ranked Montreal, which defeated Saint Mary's 29-10. Both Laval and Montreal are 3-0, and at the game Sunday the rouge et or will be putting a 60-game home unbeaten streak on the line, a mark that dates to Sept. 19, 2004, when they lost to Montreal.Calgary, 36-24 winner over Saskatchewan in the first Canada West showdown of the year, held fast at No. 5. The Huskies dropped one spot, to No. 7.Guelph moved up one spot, to No. 6, thanks to its 38-10 win over Toronto. The other ranked team from Ontario, McMaster, remains ninth.No teams moved up or down more than one position this week. Saint Mary's dropped out of the Top 10 and Bishop's, which defeated winless Sherbrooke by a point for the second time in three weeks, climbed back in at No. 10.For the third time in four weeks, there is no team from the Atlantic conference ranked among the Top 10, though St. Francis Xavier, 2-0, is one of just seven teams in Canada still undefeated.This week's Top 10, with previous rank, record, last week's result and next game:1.
