Panthers beat Sydenham for first win of the season

Posted: September 26th, 2013 @ 11:05pm

Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers gained their first senior football win of the season Thursday afternoon, a 16-4 victory over the Sydenham Golden Eagles at Brother O'Gara Field.

It was the only Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association senior match of the day.

Regi, 1-2, led 13-4 at halftime, scoring the game's lone touchdown from Stu Molholland on a short run after a long drive. Sydenham's best opportunity to get back in the game came in the fourth quarter when the Eagles, 1-1, had first-and-goal from the nine-yard line, but the threat ended when they fumbled on third down.

Other than their one TD drive in the first half, the Panthers didn't get close to the Sydenham end zone. Nick Carriere accounted for Regi's other points with three field goals, all in the 40-yard range, the best a 47-yard boot that gave his team a 10-3 lead late in the second quarter.

Mike Bashall kicked a 22-yard field goal in the first half for Sydenham.

In games today, the La Salle Black Knights, 2-0, put their unbeaten record on the line against the Holy Cross Crusaders, 1-1, at Holy Cross, while in a battle of winless double-A teams, the Bayridge Blazers, 0-2, will visit the Ernestown Eagles, 0-1. Both games will start a 3 p.m.
