Holy Cross gains second straight shutout; Ernestown gets first senior football win of the season

Two first-half interceptions each led to a touchdown for the Holy Cross Crusaders Friday afternoon and they rode those two scores to an 18-0 victory over the La Salle Black Knights in a Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association senior football game at Daniel Field.
It was the first loss of the season for La Salle, 2-1, and the second straight shutout for Holy Cross, now also 2-1.
Connor DeSousa picked off a pass from La Salle's Tim Wight in the first quarter and returned it about 50 yards to the Knights' two-yard line, from where Crusaders quarterback Jeremy Pendergast scored on a quarterback sneak.
An interception by Josh Chevrier in the second quarter led just a few plays later to a touchdown by Brody Blaskie on a 35-yard reverse.
Colin Walker threw to Ian McLatchie for a two-point convert on the second score.
David Wallace kicked the other convert and a field goal to complete the scoring.
"We continue to improve," said Holy Cross coach Tim Pendergast. "We're not there yet but we're getting better.
"Offensively, we're not sharp yet. We have a young, small offensive line so we're trying to spread the ball around and we're not sharp in our passing attack."
Playing without starting running back Reed Kekewich, the Knights were unable to mount much in the way of sustained offence, and they failed to move the ball deep into Holy Cross territory.
"La Salle was missing some players," Pendergast said, "so that made their performance gutsy."
In Friday's other game, the Ernestown Eagles gained their first win of the season, 14-10 over the Bayridge Blazers. Konner Burtenshaw rushed for 161 yards and scored both Ernestown touchdowns on runs of nine and 14 yards.
The game was tied 7-7 after the first quarter and a second-quarter field goal gave Bayridge a 10-7 lead heading into the fourth.
Next week, the Frontenac Falcons will come out of their bye week hoping to maintain their undefeated record when they entertain Ernestown Thursday at 3 p.m. and La Salle will host the Sydenham Golden Eagles, 1-1, that night in an 8 o'clock contest.
Friday afternoon, Bayridge, 0-3, will be seeking its first victory of the season when it visits Regiopolis Notre Dame, whose Panthers are 1-2.
