Guelph stays unbeaten with win over Waterloo

Posted: September 29th, 2013 @ 2:47am

All at once Saturday, the Queen's Golden Gaels fell from battling for first place to a fight for third in the Ontario University Athletics football conference.

The Gaels entered their game at London undefeated in four games but they fell to the Western Mustangs, 50-31. At Waterloo, meanwhile, the Guelph Gryphons won for the fifth time without defeat, 41-19 over the Waterloo Warriors.

All things being equal between now and then, those outcomes set the stage for a showdown for second place - and a first-round playoff bye - when the Gryphons visit Kingston on the final day of the regular schedule, Oct. 19.

Elsewhere, the Ottawa Gee-Gees spotted the York Lions a seven-point lead before erupting for a 46-16 victory and the Windsor Lancers blocked a field goal in overtime to preserve a 26-25 win over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. Friday night, the Toronto Blues whipped the Carleton Ravens 50-10.

Guelph scored 28 points in the last eight and a half minutes of the second quarter to break open a 7-6 game. Two of those touchdowns came from Carl Trivieri 92 seconds apart, both on passes from quarterback Jazz Lindsey. If that wasn't enough to send the Lions reeling, Alex Charette then returned a punt 125 yards for a touchdown less than four minutes after that.

Lindsey finished the game 19-for-33 for 249 yards, with four touchdowns but four interceptions. With all-star running back Rob Farquharson again out of the lineup, freshman Johnny Augustine rushed 13 times for 126 yards for the Gryphons.

Guelph defenders seemed to enjoy the atmosphere in the Waterloo backfield, given the amount of time they spent there. The Gryphons sacked Warriors quarterbacks nine times and made 10 other tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

At Waterloo, Windsor disappointed a Laurier Homecoming crowd of 8,114 when they denied Ronnie Pfeffer's 42-yard field goal attempt in overtime. Windsor led 25-15 with seven minutes to play but Dillon Campbell scored on a 53-yard pass from James Fracas to cut the gap to three points.

The Hawks drove 36 yards in seven plays in the final minute of the fourth quarter and Pfeffer tied the game with a 20-yard field goal as time expired.

In overtime, Windsor's Dan Cerino missed a 37-yard field goal but it went for a single and it stood up for the victory when Pfeffer's attempt at a game-winner was blocked.

Austin Kennedy completed 16 of 24 passes for 189 yards for Windsor. Mitch Dender rushed 20 times for 155 yards and he scored two touchdowns, one through the air and one on the ground, as Windsor, 4-2, climbed into a points tie with Queen's in third place.

Fracas was 23-0f-33 for Laurier for 313 yards and two touchdowns. Isaac Dell caught seven of those passes for 122 yards and Campbell rushed for 127 yards, his fourth game in a row of 125 yards or better.

With the home team leading 7-0 at the end of the first quarter at York, Vincent Campbell returned a punt 45 yards for a touchdown that sent the Gee-Gees on their way. By the end of the quarter Ottawa had scored 20 points for a 20-10 halftime lead.

Rookie quarterback Derek Wendel completed 18 of 27 passes for 297 yards and four touchdowns for Ottawa. Brendan Gillanders, hurt early in the game last week with Queen's, came back to carry the ball 19 times for 119 yards while Andrew Mullings caught 10 passes for 138 yards.

Kingston's Lewis Ward kicked five converts for the Gee-Gees, as well as field goals of 38, 24 and 31 yards.

York's Errol Brooks had 199 yards from 22 carries for York, the best single-game rushing performance in the league this year. Quarterback Miles Gibbon was less effective, completing 13 of his 26 passes for just 87 yards and two interceptions before he was replaced.

Friday at the Varsity Centre, the Blues climbed into a 26-0 lead before Andrew Banerjee kicked a field goal for Carleton with 2:09 to play in the first half. Simon Nassar was 26-for-39 through the air for 343 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions for Toronto. Alex Pierzchalski had eight of those catches for 103 yards and Paul de Pass caught five balls, also for 103 yards.

Aaron Milton rushed 17 times for 171 times for Toronto. Carleton, meanwhile, managed just 164 yards of total offence in the game.

The schedule resumes Friday night when York, 2-3, visits Guelph. Saturday, Laurier, 1-5, will play Queen's; McMaster, 2-3, comes off its bye week to entertain Waterloo, 1-4; Carleton, 0-5, will renew the Panda Game at Ottawa, 3-3; and Western will put its undefeated record on the line at 4-2 Windsor. Toronto gets the week off.
