Gaels fall two spots in national football poll

Posted: October 1st, 2013 @ 8:41pm

Queen's Golden Gaels fell two positions in this week's Canadian Interuniversity Sport ranking of intercollegiate football teams, released Tuesday.

The outcome of a game Saturday in London, where the Western Mustangs handed the Gaels their first defeat of the season, 50-31, not only kicked Queen's into fifth place in the weekly poll of University Football Reporters of Canada members, it propelled the Mustangs into first place for the first time this year.

It's rare that an undefeated No.1-ranked team can win and still fall out of the top spot but that's what happened to Laval, which picked up its fifth straight win, a 46-38 win Saturday at No. 8-ranked Bishop's. The rouge et or, which topped the ranking for the first five weeks of the season, now stands second with 13 first-place votes and 283 points (of a maximum 300). Western, 6-0, has the other 17 first-place votes and 287 points.

This week's ranking is the most volatile of the season, as each of last week's top seven teams has a new position.

Calgary and Guelph were the big climbers, each up two spots to No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. The Dinosaurs and Gryphons, both 5-0, are the nation's other two remaining undefeated teams.

Montreal, loser for the second week in a row, fell the furthest, three spots from fourth to seventh.

There are no new teams in the list this week. Yet again, there are no teams from the Atlantic conference listed among the Top 10.

This week's ranking, with previous rank, record, voting points, last result and next opponent:

1. Western (2), 6-0, 287 points; beat No. 3 Queen's 50-13; next: Saturday, at Windsor.

2. Laval (1), 5-0, 283 points; beat No. 8 Bishop's 46-38; next: Sunday, vs. Concordia.

3. Calgary (5), 5-0, 230 points; beat Alberta 76-21; next: Friday, at No. 6 Saskatchewan.

4. Guelph (6), 5-0, 199 points; beat Waterloo 41-10; next: Friday, vs. York.

5. Queen's (3), 4-1, 198 points; lost to No. 2 Western 50-31; next: Saturday, vs. Wilfrid Laurier.

6. Saskatchewan (7), 4-1, 126 points; beat British Columbia 17-12; next: Saturday, vs. No. 3 Calgary.

7. Montreal (4), 3-2, 118 points; lost 16-12 to Sherbrooke; next: Saturday, at Sherbrooke.

8. Bishop's (8), 3-2, 89 points; lost 46-38 to No. 1 Laval; next: Friday at McGill.

9. McMaster (9), 2-3, 56 points; did not play; next: Saturday, vs. Waterloo.

10. Manitoba (10), 3-2, 44 points; beat Regina 34-15; next: vs. British Columbia.
