Frontenac improves to 3-0 with home-field win over Ernestown

Frontenac Falcons have begun to get their feet under them, and that's bad news for the rest of the senior high school football teams in the county.
The two-time defending National Capital Bowl champions gained their third straight victory Thursday, 34-12 over the visiting Ernestown Eagles. Aside from the outcome, however, the Falcons appear to be overcoming the problems with organization and continuity they faced earlier, issues that are typical of a team that is acclimating new players and replacing injured ones.
"We're very experienced up front," Frontenac coach Mike Doyle said, noting the return of three of five starting offensive linemen and all four defensive linemen from last year, "but not as experienced behind.
"It's just taking those (new) guys some time - particularly in the receiving corps. A couple of guys who were in backup roles last year are playing but we have a couple of real fresh kids who haven't had to think about stuff before, so early on they'd be on the wrong side, things like that.
"They seem to be getting better each day."
Ernestown caught Frontenac by surprise on the first possession of Thursday's game, when the Eagles tried an interesting play whereby the tailback took a handoff, then just as he was about to hit the line of scrimmage he pulled up and threw the ball downfield.
The first time Troy Cook tried it, it fell incomplete. The second time, Hayden McDonald caught it and went for a touchdown that gave the Eagles an early 6-0 lead.
"We hadn't played against a team with tight ends so I think that threw the guys," Doyle said. "They were losing the tight end when he was coming off the line and he got behind the safety."
It didn't take long for the Falcons to answer, when Dustin Brogaard scored on a short run on Frontenac's next possession. Ernestown then failed on a fake punt and two plays later Falcons quarterback Rob Magee connected with Brett Byron for a 60-yard touchdown.
Two more touchdowns, one by Brogaard on a 102-yard run and the other by Byron on an eight-yard pass from Magee, in the first five minutes of the second quarter effectively put the game away. A 25-yard field goal by Declan McCann in the final minute of the half gave Frontenac a 31-6 lead at the break.
After a scoreless third quarter, Cook scored Ernestown's other touchdown when his five-yard run capped a splendid drive that took the Eagles two-thirds of the way down the field. McCann's second field goal, this one from 20 yards out, completed the scoring.
"The guys came out wanting to win," said Ernestown coach Lou Bilkovski, whose team played Thursday without its premier back, Konner Burtenshaw, sidelined with a knee injury.
"Everyone else came up and played their hearts out," Bilkovski continued, " and that's all we ask of them: Just come out and play as hard as you can. That's the bottom line, make sure we do everything we can (to win) - and we can walk with our heads up off the field."
As Frontenac improved to 3-0, Ernestown slipped to 1-2. Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association play resumes tonight, when the Sydenham Golden Eagles, 1-1, visit the La Salle Black Knights, 2-1, at 8 o'clock.
Friday, the Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers, 1-2, will play the winless Blazers, 0-3, at Bayridge at 1:45 p.m.
