Holy Cross hands La Salle first defeat in senior girls basketball play
Posted: October 11th, 2013 @ 12:20am
In a rematch of last year's county final, the Holy Cross Crusaders climbed back into the hunt for first place Thursday when they defeated the visiting La Salle Black Knights 30-28 in Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association senior girls basketball play.
Hannah King scored 10 points for Holy Cross, the defending county champion that had fallen on hard times early in the season, but has rebounded from a two-game losing streak by winning three in a row.
For La Salle, it was the first defeat of the season as the Knights, 6-1, missed an opportunity to move past the idle Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers into sole possession of first place.
Not only had the Knights not been beaten before Thursday, they'd won their six games with an average margin of victory of 26 points, and no team had managed to get closer than 15 points.
The Panthers, 6-0, are now the league's last remaining undefeated team.
Holy Cross, 5-2, is now just half a game behind third-place Frontenac, 5-1, as those four teams and Sydenham, 4-1 after just five games, have begun to distance themselves from the rest of the pack.
In Thursday's only other senior game, Alex Leggett scored 13 points to lead the Bayridge Blazers past the Kingston Blues 36-19. Playing at Bayridge, the home team improved to 3-2, while KC slipped to 1-4.
The marquee game next week will be played on Thursday, when Frontenac will visit La Salle. Related Articles:
