Banner weekend for hometown boys in CIS football programs
Posted: October 11th, 2013 @ 5:01pm
It's a red-letter weekend for three former members of the Kingston Grenadiers of the Ontario Varsity Football League, two of whom will be starting their first intercollegiate games and another who will be dressing for his first.Nick Dowd, the La Salle Secondary School graduate, will be starting at linebacker tonight for the Queen's Golden Gaels when they play the Waterloo Warriors in Waterloo. Dowd, who has dressed in a backup role for most of the Gaels' games this year, will start on a team missing linebackers Sam Sabourin, Ryan Farrell, Luke McQuilkin and Jesse Topley due to injury.Fellow freshman Aaron Brownlee, a Holy Cross Secondary School grad who has been playing on special teams all season, will be in the starting lineup for the St. Francis Xavier X-Men for their game at Mount Allison Saturday afternoon, playing in the place of injured all-star linebacker Brett Hubbeard. With his promotion, Brownlee joins Sydenham High School grad DBs Hayden Peters and Chris Shibley in the St. F.X. starting defence, which will comprise 25 per cent former Grenadiers.Meanwhile, tonight at Waterloo, another ex-Gren, Matt Pendergast, will dress for his first Ontario University Athletics game as a backup in the Queen's secondary, where William Zed has joined Christoph Smith, Matt Webster and Brendan Morgan on the shelf.Pendergast's insertion into the Gaels lineup means that six former Holy Cross Crusaders will be dressed tonight for Queen's: LB Luke Ball, DL Corey Flude, IR Aaron Gazendam, T Josh Prinsen and G Mike Sullivan. For two of the Gaels, there's a family tie with the football team. Dowd will be joining his brother, Aaron, a fullback, while Pendergast is following in the footsteps of his father, Tim, who was who was a five-year quarterback with the Gaels, through Queen's national championship season of 1992.
