Gaels mum on status of Sabourin, Aprile for Saturday's game
Posted: October 18th, 2013 @ 11:54am
As Guelph Gryphons coach Stu Lang was confirming Thursday that his injured middle linebacker wouldn't be able to play in Saturday's football game at Queen's, and that his all-star running back would, Gaels coach Pat Sheahan was leaving his team's fans to wonder about his middle linebacker and all-star wide receiver.
Appearing annoyed at the question - as he always does when the subject of his injured players is broached - at a news conference Thursday Sheahan was asked if he could say whether Sam Sabourin or Giovanni Aprile would be available to play Saturday.
"I could tell you," he said, "but I'm not."
Sabourin, a two-time conference all-star and two-time second-team all-Canadian, has missed the last two games with an undisclosed injury.
Aprile went down heavily when he was tackled at the five-yard line after making a catch Friday night in Waterloo. He left the game and did not return, spending the rest of the night with an ice pack on his right shoulder.
Queen's went to Waterloo with 10 players who had at one time started a game unable to play, including defensive back Christoph Smith, who hasn't been available all season. Seven of the others also come from a defensive unit that has become severely strapped - DBs Matt Webster, William Zed and Brendan Morgan missed Friday's game, as did lineman Andrew Sauer and Sabourin's fellow linebackers Jesse Topley, Ryan Farrell and Luke McQuilkin.
There was clearly no point in asking about the other injured offensive starters - guard Blake Sirio or receiver Justin Chapdelaine.
John Rush, a second-team conference all-star linebacker last year in just his second intercollegiate season, was a tough nut for the Gaels to crack last year. In two games he had 15 tackles, including 11.5 in the Gryphons' semifinal victory. He also forced two fumbles in that game, and intercepted a pass in the regular-season contest. He's missed two of his team's last three games, and played sparingly in the other, after suffering a knee injury in practice.
Rob Farquharson, a senior back who was also a second-team all-star in 2012, missed the first three games of the season, played once, missed another game and has been back for the last two. Despite the time out of the lineup he has rushed for more than 100 yards in each of the three games he's played.
Saturday's game, which will commence at 1 p.m. at Richardson Stadium, is a sellout. It will be broadcast on the Score 360, Cogeco cable Channel 17 in Kingston, and Queen's radio, CFRC, 101.9 FM. Related Articles:
