Hockey Gaels enjoy three-point weekend

Queen's Golden Gaels gained their first win of the young Ontario University Athletics men's hockey season Saturday night, when they defeated the Brock Badgers 5-2 at the Memorial Centre.
After a scoreless first period, the Gaels scored three straight goals in the second before the visitors answered. Brock closed to within one midway through the third period but a power-play goal by Patrick McEachen with 2:45 remaining restored the two-goal lead. An empty-net goal by Patrick McGillis sealed the verdict.
Joey Derochie, Blair Wentworth and Jordan Soquilia scored the other Queen's goals. Corey Bureau had three assists and Chris Clarke made 30 saves for the goaltending win.
Kaine Geldart, the Kingston native now in his fourth year with the Badgers, had a goal and an assist for Brock, which slipped to 2-2.
Queen's, 1-0-2, remains one of just two teams in the OUA without a regulation loss. On Friday night the Gaels lost to the other one, as the No. 9-ranked York Lions stretched their season-long undefeated streak to four games with a 2-1 shootout victory.
Mark Cross scored for York in the last minute of the first period and after a scoreless second, freshman Harrison Hendrix scored his first career intercollegiate goal to tie the game for Queen's. After a scoreless overtime, York prevailed 2-1 in the shootout.
Kevin Baillie made 20 saves as the Gaels outshot York 22-21.

After a 13-year hiatus the Laurentian Voyageurs are back playing hockey and no doubt you can count the Royal Military College Paladins among those who wish they'd stayed away just a little bit longer.
The Voyageurs thumped RMC 10-1 Saturday at the Constantine Arena, their second victory in as many days over the winless Paladins. Friday night, Laurentian came from one goal down early in the third period to claim a 3-2 win.
On Saturday, the visitors scored two goals 14 seconds apart in the first two minutes of the game and took it from there. Laurentian led 4-0 after the first period and 5-1 going into the last two minutes of the second, when the Vees scored twice in the final 74 seconds to turn the game into a rout.
Jordan Carroll scored three goals, Marc-Alain Begin had a goal and two assists and Mathew Davis assisted on three of Laurentian's first five goals to lead the Voyageurs, who are 3-1 after two weeks of play.
Jake Bullen scored the lone RMC goal.
After a splendid performance Friday night - when he faced 43 shots in the RMC goal - Paladins goaltender Paul Dorsey was replaced Saturday after giving up four goals on just five shots.
In the Friday contest, Colin Cook scored once and assisted on RMC's other goal, by Paul Fone, as the Paladins took a 2-1 lead into the third period. Matthew Eddy and Dylan Fitze scored in the first three minutes of the third to put Laurentian ahead for good.
Queen's resumes play Friday night at Nipissing, while RMC, 0-4, travels to Concordia.

Rookie forward Clare McKellar scored two goals Saturdy night to lead the No. 6-ranked Queen's Golden Gaels to a 3-1 win over the Guelph Gryphons in a women's varsity hockey game at the Strathcona Paper Centre in Napanee.
Defenceman Courtenay Jacklin scored Queen's other goal, her first career intercollegiate goal, in the second period. Shawna Griffin had two assists for the Gaels.
Amanda Parkins' goal early in the third period spoiled the shutout bid of Queen's goaltender Melanie Dodd-Moher, who made 23 saves.
The Gaels improved their record to 4-0-1, while Guelph, the No. 9-ranked team in Canada, slipped to 3-2.
Queen's resumes play Friday in Oshawa against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks.
