Five Gaels named to OUA women's rugby all-star team

Posted: October 23rd, 2013 @ 10:35pm

Five members of the Queen's Golden Gaels - three of them from Kingston-area high schools - have been named to the Ontario University Athletics women's rugby all-star team.

Lauren McEwen of Queen's, second-high scorer in the league, was named Russell division most valuable player. She is joined on the division all-star team by Claragh Pegg, a three-time all-star, Loren Baldwin of Amherstview, Karley Heyman of Harrowsmith and Devon Stride of Kingston, who were all named to the team for the first time.

All three local players are also members of the Kingston Panthers club.

Stride, a fourth-year prop and kinesiology student, was a member of Ontario team that won the silver medal in the National Women's League championship in British Columbia in June.

Heyman, a first-year wing and health studies student, is a graduate of Sydenham High School. Baldwin, a third-year forward and film studies student, went to Frontenac Secondary School. They were both members of the Ontario team that played at the national under-20 championship in June.

The Gaels will play in the OUA championship match Saturday in Guelph against the five-time defending champion Gryphons, a team that has not lost a regular-season match since 2007.

Guelph and Queen's each topped their respective divisions with five all-stars each.
