Queen's men, women advance in OUA soccer playoffs

Riley Filion scored two goals Wednesday to lead the Queen's Golden Gaels to a 6-0 East division quarter-final victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs in an Ontario University Athletics women's soccer playoff game on the upper West Campus field.
Filion opened scoring in the game's 14th minute and the Gaels led 3-0 at halftime. Melissa Jung, Alexis McKinty, Rachel Radu and Regiopolis Notre Dame grad Brittany Almeida shared the other Queen's goals.
Just five days after they battled the defending national silver medalist Gaels to a scoreless draw, the Voyageurs mustered just four shots on goal, all of which were denied by Queen's goalkeeper Madison Tyrell.
With the win, the Gaels, 7-2-7, earned a date in the East division semifinals with the Ottawa Gee-Gees, who finished first in the division with a 12-1-3 record. The game will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday in Ottawa.
Queen's did not beat Ottawa in the regular year - losing 1-0 at home and gaining a 0-0 tie at Ottawa - but the Gaels did play the nation's No. 1-ranked team tough. The Gaels allowed Ottawa just one goal, while in their other 14 games the Gee-Gees scored 54 times.
In the other East division quarter-final, the Carleton Ravens edged the Nipissing Lakers 3-2. Carleton, 9-3-4 in the regular year, will play the Varsity Blues, 10-3-3, in Toronto in Saturday's other division semifinal.

A last-minute goal by Kristian Zanette lifted the Queen's Golden Gaels to a 2-1 win over the visiting Nipissing Lakers in an OUA men's soccer division quarter-final Wednesday.
Queen's managed the only shot of a scoreless first half. Eric Koskins scored the game's first goal for Queen's from the top of the 18-yard box early in the second half and it looked as though Gaels keeper Dylan Maxwell might make it stand up until Nipissing's Ryan Mantle redirected a cross past him in the game's 67th minute.
As the team's approached full time, Zanette prevented overtime when he fired a hard shot into the top right corner over Nipissing goalie Andrew Reddick.
Queen's will travel to Ottawa for an East division semifinal Sunday. The Gaels, 6-5-3, finished six points behind second-place Carleton in the regular season, and dropped both their games with the Ravens, 2-0 and 4-1.
Toronto, 2-1 winner over Laurentian in Wednesday's other quarter-final match, will play Ryerson in Sunday's other East division semifinal.
