Queen's captures its first OU women's rugby title

Queen's claimed the first Ontario University Athletics women's rugby title in school history Saturday, when the Gaels defeated the Guelph Gryphons 19-15 at Guelph.
Both teams will advance to the Canadian intercollegiate championship tournament, beginning Thursday at Laval.
The No.3-ranked Gaels, undefeated in eight regular-season and playoff games, spotted Guelph, the No. 2-ranked team in the country, an early five-point lead before coming back to defeat the five-time defending conference champion.
"We knew the game was going to be a tight one and it certainly was," Queen's coach Beth Barz said. "We started off a little bit under pressure but we held up pretty well."
Guelph opened scoring after just five minutes of play but a try by Bronwyn Corrigan and a convert by the division's most valuable player, Lauren McEwen, put the Gaels into a 7-5 lead. A try by Kayla Roote left the visitors leading 12-5 at halftime.
"The girls reacted really well (to being down early)," Barz said. "it was just a matter of getting ourselves together and doing what we needed to do."
Guelph, a team that scored a league-best 298 points in fashioning a perfect 5-0 record in the regular season - and outscored two playoff opponents 98-0 - cut the Queen's lead to two points early in the second half but Roote's second try of the game and McEwen's second convert made it 19-10.
Devon Keys scored her second try of the game late in the second half for Guelph but the Gryphons were ultimately betrayed by their inability to convert any of their scores.
