York hands hockey women 3-2 shootout defeat

Posted: October 27th, 2013 @ 1:30am

A shootout goal by Andrea Joyce gave the visiting York Lions a 3-2 win over the Queen's Golden Gaels Saturday night in an Ontario University Athletics women's hockey game at the Memorial Centre.

The teams were tied 2-2 at the end of regulation time, after York's Mariah Krancevich scored with less than eight minutes remaining in the third period. A five-minute overtime period where Queen's outshot the Lions 4-1 was scoreless.

Krancevich scored in the shootout while the first two Queen's shooters failed. Taryn Pilon scored on the Gaels' next attempt but Joyce ended things when she beat Queen's goalie Caitlyn Lahonen.

York took a 1-0 first-period lead but second-period goals by Shawna Griffin and Nadia Larocca sent Queen's into the third with a 2-1 lead. Megan Lee made 37 saves in the Lions' goal, as York reached .500 at 3-3. The Gaels, despite outshooting the Lions 39-34, slipped to 5-0-2.

Friday night in Oshawa, Pilon and Larocca each collected four points as the Gaels defeated the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks 5-2. Mel Dodd-Moher made 32 saves for the goaltending win.

Though they were outshot 6-2 in the opening period the Gaels emerged with a 1-0 lead thanks to Clare McKellar's fifth goal of the year. Queen's led 3-0 going into the third period.

Morgan McHaffie, with two, Pilon and Larocca scored the other goals for the No. 5-ranked Gaels, who resume play Saturday at Waterloo.
