Top spots settled as girls basketball schedule enters final days

Only a couple of the pieces of the senior girls basketball playoff puzzle remain to fall into place in the final two days of the regular Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association season.
Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers completed an undefeated regular schedule Tuesday when they posted a 57-33 home-court win over the La Salle Black Knights. La Salle finished its regular schedule 8-2 and though Sydenham, with a win in its final game Thursday, could also finish 8-2, the Knights have the advantage in the tie-breaker by virtue of their 35-20 win at Sydenham Sept. 19.
Sydenham will finish third regardless of how it fares in its final game, at home against the Kingston Blues. That's because even though a loss would drop the Golden Eagles into a three-way tie with Frontenac and Holy Cross at 7-3, Sydenham would be favoured because it defeated both of those teams during the regular year.
Frontenac will finish fourth, for having defeated Holy Cross, and the Falcons will host the Crusaders in one quarter-final game next Tuesday.
Frontenac won its final regular-season game Tuesday, 37-31 over the Bayridge Blazers, while Holy Cross closed with a 44-6 win over Ernestown.
The final three playoff spots will go to the Kingston Blues, 47-24 winners Tuesday over Queen Elizabeth, Bayridge and the Loyalist Lancers, who dropped their fifth game in a row Tuesday, 46-21 to Sydenham.
How that shakes out will depend on the outcome of KC's game at Sydenham and Loyalist's game Thursday at Bayridge and the outcome of that scramble is not insignificant to those teams as they strive to avoid a first-round playoff date at Regi.
The Blues and Blazers are both 4-5 and LC is 3-6 going into the final day of the season. In head-to-head games so far among those teams, KC has a split, having lost to Bayridge and beaten Loyalist.
