Hockey Gaels, RMC both narrowly defeated

Posted: November 4th, 2013 @ 1:19am

Queen's Golden suffered their second extra-time loss in as many nights Saturday, when they dropped a 3-2 decision to the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks in an Ontario University Athletics men's hockey game at the Memorial Centre.

The Gaels, though they remain without a regulation defeat, have now lost more games than they've won this year. In seven games, they've won three times but they've been beaten four times in overtime or a shootout.

Queen's was cruising through Saturday's game with a 2-0 lead eight minutes into the third period when Tech scored its first goal. A power-play goal at 15:02 by Jason Shaw tied the game and James Woodcroft won it for the Ridgebacks in overtime.

Kelly Jackson scored his fifth goal of the year in the first period and Chris Van Laren got his first goal in the second period for Queen's.

The Gaels outshot the visitors 41-36, including 15-9 in the third period when Tech scored its two goals. Queen's goalie Chris Clarke weathered a 20-shot storm in the second period and the Gaels were outshot 4-3 in the five-minute overtime.

Playing in Ottawa, the Royal Military College Paladins suffered a similarly painful defeat, 2-1 at the hands of the Ottawa Gee-Gees. Mathieu Tanguay-Theriault scored the go-ahead goal with 67 seconds left in the third period.

RMC opened scoring as the teams traded goals in the second period, after a scoreless first. Second-year defenceman Marcus Quinlan scored his first intercollegiate goal for the Paladins.

Paul Dorsey made 39 saves minding the RMC net, as the Paladins were outshot 41-17.

The outcomes leave Queen's with 10 points, tied with Carleton, one behind East division-leading McGill. RMC fell to 0-8.

Both local teams resume play at home on Friday night, RMC hosting the Brock Badgers at the Constantine Arena and the Gaels entertaining the Toronto Blues at the Memorial Centre.
