Seven Gaels named to OUA football all-star team

Posted: November 6th, 2013 @ 5:39pm

Seven members of the Queen's Golden Gaels - including three members of the defensive secondary - have been named to the Ontario University Athletics football all-star team. The team, chosen in a poll of the league's coaches, was announced Wednesday.

Corners Yann Dika-Balotoken and Andrew Lue and defensive halfback Tijani Chase-Dunawa are joined on the all-star defence by end Derek Wiggan and linebacker Sam Sabourin.

Sabourin and Lue are both three-time all-stars, while Chase-Dunawa and Wiggan were both selected all-stars for the second consecutive season.

Queen's, 8-1 and the second-place team in the regular year, has the most defensive all-stars of any team in the league.

Guard Derek Morris and tackle Josh Prinsen represent Queen's on the all-star offence.

Morris, a graduate of Napanee District Secondary School, is the only player returning to the first team all-star offence from 2012. Prinsen, from Holy Cross Secondary School, was named to the all-conference team for the first time.

Seven of Queen's defensive starters were named to an all-star team, as tackle John Miniaci and linebacker Justin Baronaitis were selected for the second team. Oddly, Baronaitis was chosen as a linebacker though he started three of seven Queen's seven regular-season games at safety and two others at defensive halfback.

Also named to the second all-star team from Queen's are wide receiver Giovanni Aprile and running back Ryan Granberg.

Ten members of the undefeated regular-season champion Western Mustangs have been named all-stars, including a league-leading five on offence. The Mustangs also have four defensive all-stars, and Lirim Hajrullahu was selected as both the all-star punter and place-kicker.

In all, Western, the team that will host Queen's in the 106th Yates Cup championship game Saturday, has 10 first-team all-stars. Queen's has seven, Guelph, Toronto, McMaster and Ottawa have two each and Windsor and York each have one.

As has become the custom, the league has not named an all-star fullback, even though among the Gaels and their seven regular-season opponents in the regular season, six of the eight list fullback as a position on their depth chart.

Instead, two "running backs" are listed on both the first and second all-star teams, with tailbacks Brendan Gillanders of Ottawa and Errol Brooks of York each getting first-team honours. In another head-scratcher, Dillon Campbell of Laurier, who led the conference in rushing by almost 120 yards, could do no better than the second all-star team.

Sophomore Will Finch of Western is the all-star quarterback. He's also considered a favourite to be named the league's most valuable player when its individual awards are announced at a news conference Thursday morning in Hamilton.

He's one of five Mustangs on the first all-star team, as Western placed more players on the all-star offence than any other team. With two other players on the second-team offence, Western has had seven of its 12 offensive starters named an all-star.
