Hockey Gaels benefit from Ryerson suspension

Queen's Golden Gaels put two points in the bank this week and they didn't even have to lace up their skates.
The Gaels will receive a victory by forfeit as a result of Ryerson University suspending its hockey team Monday for seven days. The Rams had been scheduled to play Queen's at the Memorial Centre Saturday night.
In a statement, Ryerson said its hockey team is being suspended for violating its student-athlete code of conduct by consuming alcohol during a pre-season trip to New Jersey last month for exhibition games with Princeton.
"Each student-athlete is a representative of Ryerson and is highly visible to other people, regardless of whether the team meets on or off campus," the release states. "The student-athlete is responsible for his or her own behavior at formal and informal, scheduled and unscheduled events."
Members of the team apparently were drinking beer in their hotel in New Jersey and there were noise complaints from other guests.
The University is suspending head coach Graham Wise for four games and part-time assistant coach Lawrence Smith has been dismissed.
In addition to the game with Queen's, the Rams, 5-2 and tied for second place in the West division of Ontario University Athletics, will also forfeit their game Thursday night against Ontario Tech. The team will resume play Nov. 15 at home against Royal Military College.
As a result of the suspension, the Gaels' only game this weekend will be at the Memorial Centre Friday night, 7:30 p.m., against the Toronto Blues.
Queen's, 3-0-4 - and the only team left in Ontario University Athletics without a regulation defeat - is tied for second place in the East division with Carleton, one point behind McGill. The Varsity Blues, 5-3, are tied for second place in the West division.
RMC, meanwhile, will be seeking it first victory of the season this weekend. Friday night they Paladins will host the Brock Badgers and Saturday the York Lions will visit. Both games at the Constantine Arena will start at 7 p.m.
