Hockey Gaels move into first place

Queen's Golden Gaels spotted the Toronto Blues a one-goal lead before coming back for a 3-1 Ontario University Athletics hockey victory Friday night at the Memorial Centre.
The win leaves the Gaels as the only team in the league without a regulation defeat. Their record will improve to 5-0-4 tonight when a default win over Ryerson is registered, good for first place in the East division, one point ahead of McGill.
Ryerson this week suspended its hockey team for seven days for violating the school's code of conduct on a road trip last month, and the Rams' scheduled game with the Gaels Saturday night is one of the two they will forfeit as a result.
After Paul Van de Velde scored the only goal of the first period Friday night for Varsity, Queen's goals by Chris Van Laren and Patrick McGillis less than three minutes apart early in the second period gave the home team a 2-1 lead it successfully nursed through the third period.
Jordan Coccimiglio assisted on both goals.
McGillis scored his second goal of the game into an open Toronto net with one second left on the clock, sending the Blues back home with a 5-4 record.
Kevin Baillie turned aside all but one of 22 Toronto shots to gain the goaltending victory. Queen's took 29 shots at the Blues' goal.
Meanwhile, at the Constantine Arena, the Brock Badgers scored three goals in the first four minutes of the second period to break open a tie game, en route to a 6-2 victory over the Royal Military College Paladins.
RMC's Chris Smerek scored not long after the Brock outburst to close the gap to 4-2 but the Paladins could get no closer. They were outshot 15-6 in the third period, 40-24 overall.
Six different players scored for the Badgers, with Thomas Stajan, Jordan Gignac, Dylan MacEachern and Matt Abercrombie each getting a goal and an assist. Neither of Kingston's Geldart brothers, Kaine or Anthony, managed a point for Brock, now 4-4-1.
Scott Domenico scored RMC's first goal, enabling the Paladins to emerge from the first period in a 1-1 tie.
Tonight, the Paladins, now 0-9, will host the York Lions for a 7 o'clock game at Constantine. York, 5-4, lost 4-3 Friday night at Carleton.
