Cloudy but chance of rain just 20 per cent for Yates Cup game
Posted: November 9th, 2013 @ 11:50am
LONDON - It's cloudy in the Forest City an hour before game time for today's Yates Cup championship football match between the Queen's Golden Gaels and Western Mustangs.
The temperature is 9 degrees and the wind is 6 km/hr but gusts out of the east are forecast by The Weather Network to reach upwards of 30 km/hr by game time. There is a 20 per cent chance of precipitation.
Some Yates Cup trivia:
* Queen's and Western first played football in 1929, with Queen's winning both games, 25-2 and 14-0. They didn't meet in a playoff game until 1954, however, and never clashed for the Vanier Cup until 1979.
* Western has won the Yates Cup more than any other team: 29 times. (Queen's is third, with 23 Yates Cup championships, two fewer than Toronto)
* Western has won the Yates three of the last six years, most recently in 2010. Queen's has won the Yates once since returning to the OUA 13 years ago, in 2009.
* This will be the 106th year of competition for the Yates Cup, the oldest Canadian intercollegiate trophy in any sport and the oldest football trophy still being awarded in North America, predating the Grey Cup by 11 years.*
* The trophy was presented by Dr. Henry Brydges Yates, a McGill medical graduate of 1893 who played football while in university. He served in the Canadian Army Medical Corps during the First World War and while overseas, Yates fell ill with bronchitis and died of it in 1915.*
* As originally established, the three founding members - McGill, Queen's and Toronto - played home-and-home series with each of the others and the top team from the regular schedule was awarded the Yates Cup. A playoff game was held only if there was a tie for first place, or the second-place team had beaten the first-place team in a regular-season game. As a result, there were just 27 Yates Cup championship games before 1971, and a total of 70 to date.*
* Queen's and Western have played six times in playoff games, and twice for the Yates Cup, in 1979 and 2009. The 2009 game, played before 7,253 fans at Richardson Stadium in Kingston, was one of the most thrilling in the history of the league. There were seven lead changes, on two other occasions the game was tied and the teams combined for more than 1,200 yards of total offence. Danny Brannagan of Queen's and Michael Faulds of Western each threw for more than 500 yards, in single-game performances that remain the 9th and 10th best in league history.
Results of Queen's-Western playoff games:
Nov. 20, 1954, Western 20 Queen's 18
Oct. 30, 1971, Western 42 Queen's 3
Nov. 10, 1979, Western 32 Queen's 14 (Yates Cup)
Nov. 2, 2002, Queen's 55 Western 20 (conference semifinal)
Oct. 27, 2007, Western 27 Queen's 19 (conference quarter-final)
Nov. 14, 2009, Queen's 43 Western 39 (Yates Cup)
