La Salle wins opener at OFSAA girls AA basketball

La Salle Black Knights began their pursuit of the provincial girls AA basketball championship Thursday with a 50-24 win over Belleville St. Theresa in an opening-round game at the 18-team Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations tournament in Windsor.

The Knights are idle until Friday afternoon, when they will face the loser of Thursday night's game between Welland Centennial, the top seed at the three-day event, and Stratford St. Michael.

St. Theresa, the tournament's 16th-seeded team, scored the first three points of Thursday afternoon's game before La Salle scored nine in a row to take the lead, for good as it turned out.

"They had one in-bounds play where they were throwing it in to their one tall girl," La Salle coach Jason Reynolds said. "Ten of their 17 points were off this one in-bounds play. When we took that away they struggled to score.

"That was one key. Then once we got up 34-19, the coach seemed to start putting in their subs more, and they were a five-person deep team."

A late second-quarter spurt enabled La Salle to go into halftime with a 25-17 advantage. The sixth-seeded Knights outscored St. Theresa 25-7 in the second half, scoring 18 points in the fourth quarter and allowing the Belleville school to score just two in the third.

"Our defence was solid the entire game," Reynolds said. "We got them out of rhythm and they were struggling to find any easy baskets. Our girls did very well that way."

Lilie Dixon was the game's top scorer, with 18 points for La Salle.

"She had a great game shooting the ball," Reynolds said. "She had 18 and that included four threes, but she had at least one, maybe two more where her foot was on the line."

Kristin Treitz, who scored 13 points, and Chelsea Van Camp also had "great games" for La Salle, Reynolds said. "Chelsea didn't score very much but she was a key passer into Kristin for her baskets."

Jenna Milligan scored 10 points for St. Theresa.
