Two-win weekend for Queen's hockey women

Posted: November 24th, 2013 @ 11:29pm

Queen's Golden Gaels gained their second win of the weekend Sunday afternoon but it didn't come easily.

They needed an unassisted goal by Courtenay Jacklin at 3:27 of overtime to defeat the Nipissing Lakers 4-3 in an Ontario University Athletics women's hockey game in North Bay. It was Jacklin's fifth goal of the year.

Though Nipissing had won just four of its previous 12 games, Queen's fell behind 2-0 in the first period before battling back to lead 3-2 by the middle of the second. A goal by Taryn Pilon just 18 seconds into the period tied the score and Morgan McHaffie's second goal of the game seven minutes later but the nation's No. 3-ranked team ahead.

Brittney Cosmo tied the game for Nipissing midway through the third period.

Queen's, 11-1-3, outshot Nipissing 33-20, including 3-2 in extra time.

Saturday in Sudbury, McHaffie collected three assists and goaltender Mel Dodd-Moher posted the shutout as the Gaels blanked the Laurentian Voyageurs 5-0. Three unanswered goals in the second period enabled Queen's to break open a one-goal game, en route to knocking the Voyageurs' record to 5-8.

Danielle Girard, Nadia Larocca, Shawna Griffin, Clare McKellar and Emily Gervais shared the goals for Queen's, which outshot the home team 51-20.

Sunday's win stretched Queen's lead in league standings to three points over Laurier, 11-2, and Guelph, 11-3. The Gaels will resume play Saturday afternoon, when they will host Windsor, 3 p.m., at the Memorial Centre.
