Gaels to open 2014 football season at Carleton

Posted: December 4th, 2013 @ 11:16pm

After a 16-year hiatus, the Queen's Golden Gaels will renew their football rivalry with the Carleton Ravens when the 2014 Ontario University Athletics season opens on Sunday, Aug. 24, in Ottawa.

The Gaels and Ravens last met in 1998, when visiting Queen's thumped Carleton 40-8 in the 51st meeting of a series that began in 1971. That was the last season for Ravens football until the Carleton program was resurrected last fall, and the teams did not meet in 2013.

Queen's has faced only four other opponents - McGill, Ottawa, Toronto and Western - more often than it has played Carleton, which was winless in its first season back in the league.

The Gaels will open with back-to-back games on the road, following the Carleton match with a contest in Windsor on Labour Day. The home opener will be Saturday, Sept. 6, against the Ottawa Gee-Gees.

Queen's will host the Yates Cup rematch against the Western Mustangs on Sept. 13, then conclude the road portion of its season the following two weeks at Guelph and McMaster, where the Gaels will be the Homecoming opponent for both teams.

The Gaels will have their bye in Week 7 and be idle on Saturday, Oct. 4. Toronto will be the opponent at Richardson Stadium on Oct. 11 and the York Lions will visit to close the regular schedule on Saturday, Oct. 18.

Queen's will play neither Waterloo nor Wilfrid Laurier in 2014.
