Nebraska junior team turns corner under Hulton's direction
Posted: January 6th, 2014 @ 8:19pm
It took awhile to get the ship - er, stage coach - turned around, but it appears the Tri-City Storm may finally be headed in the right direction.
"It's coming," said Jim Hulton, the Kingston man who took over coaching the junior team based in Kearney, Neb., in late November.
The team was 4-9-2 when Hulton arrived and it proceded to loose seven of its next nine games, a stretch that included a five-game losing streak. A 6-5 overtime win Dec . 13, however, sent the team on a roll that has seen it win five of last six games.
Still, the Storm remains 18 points out of a playoff spot.
"The mountain is still pretty steep," Hulton said.
The first couple of weeks with the team "were ugly," he said. "I knew coming in that there was a lot of work to be done and I think sometimes you underestimate how much when you take over in mid-season.
"It was a lot to pile on the kids, because we eventually changed quite a few things (but) there were a lot of holes to plug and you can't do it all at the same time. We wanted them to play a different style. There was lots of different stuff to put in place but it's a hard-working crew and they're all starting to be on the same page, which is half the battle."
