Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:
Fifty years ago today, Friday, March 1, 1963
Because of his scouting duties with the Boston Bruins, Wren Blair will not be with the Frontenacs for the remainder of the schedule. Captain and playing assistant coach Harry Sinden, who has been doing much of the coaching - especially on the road - since January, will handle the bench duties full time for the duration.
"I'm not at all worried about how the club will play for Harry," Blair told the Whig-Standard. "He's been getting tremendous mileage out of the players lately and I fully expect that they will continue to put out for him."
The Frontenacs haven't lost on the road since a 4-1 defeat at Hull Jan. 29.
Few could have foreseen that nine years later, a coaching odyssey Sinden began in Kingston would lead him to Team Canada in the 1972 Summit Series with the Soviet Union, and fewer still might have suspected that two of the players putting out for him in Frontenacs uniforms - Pat Stapleton and Jean-Paul Parise - would be putting out for him again in Moscow.
