Hockey Gaels drop third game in a row

A third-period goal by Mathieu Pompei gave the McGill Redmen a 2-1 men's hockey victory over the Queen's Golden Gaels Friday night in Montreal.
The win was the second in seven days by McGill over the Gaels, who lost for the third game in a row after going through the first 17 games of their Ontario University Athletics schedule without a regulation-time defeat.
With the victory, McGill moved into first place in the East division, as the Gaels fell all the way to fourth, two points behind McGill, one behind Trois-Rivieres, 4-3 winner Friday night at Laurentian, and tied with Carleton, 6-0 winner Friday over Concordia.
With more victories, Carleton would be favoured in the tie breaker.
A goal by defenceman Ryan McKeirnan, his 10th of the year, on a first-period power play, was the only one of 17 McGill shots in the first to beat beseiged Queen's goaltender Kevin Bailie.
After the teams played a scoreless second period, Tyler Moore scored his fifth goal of the year in the sixth minute of the third period. It took just 33 seconds, however, for Pompei to restore the Redmen's lead.
Despite getting Bailie on the bench in favour of a sixth skater for the final 31 minutes of the game, Queen's could not get the equalizer.
Playing before a crowd of 1,471, the home team outshot Queen's 38-26.
Queen's, now 12-3-5, will play Concordia, 6-9-3, Saturday afternoon in Montreal.

A stirring comeback went for naught Thursday night in Oshawa, where the Royal Military College Paladins dropped a 4-3 shootout decision to the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks.
RMC spotted Tech a 3-0 first-period before rallying for three second period goals to tie the game. The third period, when the Ridgebacks outshot RMC 12-9, and a five-minute overtime period, when the Paladins were outshot 7-4, were scoreless.
Luke Van Moerkerke and Mitch Bennett scored in the shootout for Tech, while RMC wasn't able to get any shots past Ridgebacks goaltender Colin Dzijacky.
The Paladins showed pluck, as they fell behind 3-0 after giving up a goal in the final minute of the first period, the ninth time this season - not counting empty-net goals - RMC has allowed an opponent to score in the final 60 seconds of a peirod.
This time Eric Louis-Seize scored just 23 seconds into the second period to right the ship and ignite the game-tying rally.
Mitchell Hewson and Kyle Phillips also scored for RMC, which was outshot 43-34.
The Paladins will play McGill Saturday night in Montreal.
