La Salle an honorable mention in national basketball poll

Posted: January 24th, 2014 @ 8:13pm

La Salle Black Knights, the top team in the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association, is an honorable mention in the most recent national ranking of the top 25 high school senior boys basketball teams by northpolehoops.com.

The Knights have played in some distinguished company this year, beating the No. 20-ranked team, Kitchener St. Mary, in the championship game of the Queen's University tournament in December. In the same event St. Mary defeated Father Goetz of Mississauga, which is the No. 9-ranked team in the northpolehoops poll.

Next weekend, La Salle will face No. 24 Cardinal Newman of Hamilton at the Silver Fox Invitational tournament in Hamilton.

Twelve of the top 25 teams - and eight of the top nine - are from Ontario. Schools from six provinces appear in the list. Of the 21 Ontario teams ranked or listed as honorable mention, La Salle, a AA school, is the only one from east of Toronto.

Toronto St. Michael's has the No. 1 spot in the current ranking, the second of the season. St. Mike's defeated Toronto Oakwood, the previous No. 1, on the way to winning the 54th annual edition of its own tournament Jan. 12.

The Knights, 7-1 in league play, resume their regular schedule Feb. 4 at Queen Elizabeth.
