Hockey Gaels lose at Carleton; women move into first-place tie

Queen's Golden Gaels surrendered a pair of power-play goals Friday night and they went down to a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the No. 7-ranked Carleton Ravens in an Ontario University Athletics hockey game in Ottawa.
The Gaels, 10th-ranked team in Canada, scored first, on a shorthanded goal by Corey Bureau, and the teams were tied 1-1 after the first period. After exchanging goals 77 seconds apart early in the second period, Carleton went ahead - for good, it turned out - when Joey West scored at 14:02, assisted by former Kingston Frontenac Corey Durocher.
The third period was scoreless, though the Gaels outshot Carleton 10-4.
It was the fourth loss - the second to the Ravens - in the last six games for Queen's, which swept through the first 17 games of the season without a loss in regulation time.
As a result, the Gaels, now 14-4-5, find themselves in third place, two points behind McGill, 6-5 winner Friday night at Laurentian, and one point behind Trois-Rivieres, 7-0 winner Friday over Ontario Tech.
In winning its sixth game in a row - and ninth in the last 10 - Carleton, 15-5-1, strengthened its grip on fourth place and moved within two points of the Gaels, who resume play next Friday night at Concordia.
Joey Derochie scored the other Queen's goal, while Damian Cross, with his team-leading 11th goal of the year, scored one of Carleton's power-play goals and assisted on the other, by Joe Pleckaitis.

Courtenay Jacklin had a goal and an assist Friday night to lead the Queen's women to a 3-1 win over the Waterloo Warriors at the Memorial Centre.
It was the sixth win in the last seven games for the No. 5-ranked Gaels, who were playing their first game in two weeks. It lifted Queen's into a first-place tie with the idle Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, a tie that will be broken Saturday night when the Gaels host No. 4-ranked Laurier at the Memorial Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
Queen's led 1-0 after the first period Friday night and 2-1 after the second. Jacklin's goal, her sixth of the year, was the only one of the third period. Danielle Girard and Nadia Larocca scored the other goals for the Gaels.
Caitlyn Lahonen made 21 saves for the goaltending victory. Queen's, 14-2-3, outshot the home team 30-22, as Waterloo fell to 7-9-4.
With an assist on Larocca's goal, Morgan McHaffie moved to within nine points of the OUA career women's scoring record, 155 points, set by Elizabeth Chiasson of Queen's in an 80-game career, 2001-05.
