Gaels bow in overtime to Laurier
Posted: January 26th, 2014 @ 1:43pm
Laura Brooker's goal with just 44 seconds remaining in a five-minue overtime period gave the No.4-ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks a 4-3 win over the Queen's Golden Gaels in an Ontario University Athletics women's hockey game Saturday night at the Memorial Centre.
It was the third goal of the game for Brooker, her 10th of the season, and it allowed Laurier to move one point ahead of the No. 5-ranked Gaels into first place in the OUA standings.
The Hawks came all the way back from a 2-0 first-period deficit the Gaels built with goals by Jessica Wakefield and Morgan McHaffie, despite killing three penalties and being outshot 12-7.
Brooker promptly tied the game at the start of the second period, with a goal after just 14 seconds of play and another 49 seconds later. Shawna Griffin put Queen's back in front before the period ended with her 11th goal of the year but a goal Laurier's Devon Skeats early in the third period ultimately forced overtime.
Megan Howe had three assists for the Hawks, who have now defeated Queen's twice this year, once in a shootout and once in overtime. For Laurier, it was the fourth time in the last five games that overtime or a shootout was required; the Hawks had lost the previous three.
Laurier, who peppered Gaels goaltender Mel Dodd-Moher with 34 shots - Queen's had just 18 on Hawks goalie Amanda Smith - scored on its only shot of overtime, as Brooker banked a shot off a Gaels player after a breakaway.
With a goal and an assist, McHaffie moved to within seven points of the OUA career scoring record, 155 points, held by former Queen's player Elizabeth Chiasson.
The Gaels, 3-3 this season in extra time, have concluded the home portion of their regular schedule. They'll resume play next weekend with games Friday at Brock and Saturday at No. 3 Guelph.
